The Economic Justice Network (EJN), West African Civil Society Platform on the Cotonou Agreement (POSCAO) and the secretariat of the African Trade Network (ATN) has organised a press briefing on the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) to deliberate on it. A representative of EJN, Mr Gyekye Tanoh, indicated that the association appreciates the efforts made by ECOWAS to maximise West Africa’s benefits and gains as an EPA group, negotiating with the European Union (EU).

He reminded government and regional authorities of current economic trends worldwide and its looming devastating effects if efforts are not made at repositioning relations within the global economy on the basis of a genuine substantive orientation on integrated regional production as well as developmental transformation.

Mr Tanoh therefore called on citizens and organisations to engage themselves effectively on issues concerning the EPA process.

According to him, Ghana should not allow old habits and ways of thinking that exist in some aspects of current EPA proposals to imprison the nation and send the country back from the progressive steps being taken as the 21st century unfolds.

“We extend a further call for solidarity of EU citizens who are currently chaffing under the disastrous cost of the kind of liberalisation that the EU is seeking to impose on the far more vulnerable economies through the EPA” he added.
