The UNCTAD 2009 report on Economic Development has been launched in Accra. It is the latest in a series of yearly UNCTAD reports that provide additional angles on issues affecting Africa and the developing world.

This year’s report, entitled “Strengthening Regional Economic Integration for Africa’s Development”, comprises five chapters dealing with the issues of challenges and opportunities in the context of the experience of regional integration for Africa; expanding intra-african trade for Africa’s growth; intra-African investment; emerging issues in regional trade integration in Africa; and policy recommendations on strengthening regional integration in Africa. **

Setting the context for the joint UNCTAD-TWN-Africa launch, Coordinator of Third World Network-Africa, Yao Graham, explained that this report comes not only in the midst of the worst economic crisis in eighty years, but also in the shadow of a just-ended Summit of ECOWAS leaders, where it was revealed that timetable for monetary union in West Africa had been pushed back to 2015, precisely because of difficulties within the global economy.

He further added how the supplying of water by Ghana to Togo, coupled with concessions made by Nigeria to Ghana over oil and gas point to some of the benefits of regional integration.
